Because our time in Baseco is quite short, we wanted to focus on "quick wins". Based on past mission trips to Baseco, we were told that there is a huge need for worming medication.
Due to un-sanitary living conditions, lack of access to clean food and water, and lack of hygiene, many children living at the slum have worms. Unfortunately, in The Philippines they only sell the liquid de-worming medication which is not easy to dispense en-masse in a sanitary manner.
One of the easiest wins is to hand out these "chocolate squares" de-worming medication to the kids. They love the flavour and will happily take them as they do not see it as medication.
Thanks to generous donors, we will be bringing and supplying approximately 3,500 of these chocolate de-worming tablets in Baseco.
At AU$18 for 24 chocolate squares, that's a pretty good use of funds raised! In the field of aid and development work, it is always good to have quantifiable targets and such an easy win is most welcome!
